Introduction to IAIM

The goal of the International Association of Immunization Managers (IAIM) Network is to help drive the achievement of national, regional and international immunization goals, including those in the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), by fostering forward-thinking and superior management of immunization programs.

Tremendous gains have been made in immunizations over the last 40 years. Smallpox has been eradicated, poliomyelitis eradication is in sight, and progress is being made in measles control. Global immunization coverage for basic vaccines is at its highest.

However, in the 21st century, immunization programs are facing more challenges than ever. Many immunization programs are still struggling to hit vaccination coverage targets due to growing populations, an increased emphasis on adult immunization, and out-of-date vaccine delivery infrastructure. This poses a great challenge to eradication and elimination goals, as well as the introduction of new vaccines into the pipeline. Additionally, sub-populations within many countries are resisting or refusing vaccines based on personal or cultural beliefs, despite the overwhelming scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of vaccines.

Immunization managers have the most critical role in addressing these challenges, as they are the ones who must skillfully manage and integrate each of the elements of a successful immunization program: cost-effective and dependable procurement processes, reliable funding, an effective cold chain, consistent monitoring of vaccine safety and efficacy, effective surveillance systems, productive and proactive communication with the public, and well-trained health workers. Yet, these important health professionals are too often under-trained, unable to access the resources they need, and lack a support network for seeking new management approaches and successful practices. IAIM is working to change that.

Sabin launched IAIM in 2013, with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
