El cólera se expande desde el Caribe hacia el continente americano

El brote de cólera que estalló hace tres años en Haití y se expandió a República Dominicana y Cuba ha comenzado a diseminarse en la América continental. Durante este último mes han sido confirmados 171 casos en México de una cepa un 95% similar a la que circula actualmente por el Caribe y que a su vez proviene del Sur de Asia. En agosto también se detectaron media decena de contagios en Venezuela y Chile.

Mexico Ministry of Health takes steps to curb cholera outbreak

Flooding and landslides from a tropical storm and hurricane in Mexico last month could have contributed to 171 cases of cholera reported in the country from Sept. 9 to Saturday.

The Ministry of Health in Mexico confirmed one death from infections that resulted from this strain of cholera. The illness has resulted in 39 hospitalizations.

One hundred and fifty-seven of the reported cases were reported in the sovereign state of Hidalgo. The remaining cases were reported in Mexico and the states of San Luis Potosi and Veracruz.

MSF reports successful oral cholera immunization campaign in Guinea

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières’s and its research center Epicentre announced on Thursday that a large-scale cholera vaccine campaign showed potential sustainability for the oral cholera vaccine to control potential epidemics.

The campaign took place in Guinea in 2012 and sought to observe the ability of the oral cholera vaccine to offset a potential outbreak. Cholera is a common epidemic in Guinea during the wet season and risk of a major cholera outbreak was high last year due to a large epidemic in neighboring Sierra Leone.

Cholera kills 50 in northern Nigeria in a week

Cholera has killed 50 people in northwest Nigeria in the past week, health officials said Monday, in the latest outbreak of the disease which has claimed thousands of lives across the country since 2010.

The latest infections struck Zamfara state where residents began drinking water directly from streams and untreated wells after a main water pipeline was forced to shut.

August 20, 2013 -- Tajikistan has temporarily closed the border it shares with Afghanistan's province of Badakhshan amid reports of a cholera outbreak there.

A spokesman for the Tajik border guard service, Khushnud Rakhmatullaev, told journalists on August 20 that the border has been closed since August 19.
