Nigeria: Polio-Borne Paralysis Jumps 28 Percent in FCT

Cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in the FCT have increased by 28% this year alone, and authorities say it signals increased surveillance on poliomyelitis.

Some 292 cases of AFP were recorded in the first six months of 2015 alone, compared with a total 228 last year, according to executive secretary of the FCT's Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed.

He was speaking during the field visit of UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon to a health centre in the FCT's Area 2, Garki.

The race to zero: Nigeria's fight to wipe out polio

Kano State, Nigeria (CNN)Ahmadu Kanduwa's home is just two kilometers away from the local clinic in Nigeria's northern Sumaila district -- two kilometers from the vaccine that could have prevented his son, Isa, from contradicting polio more than a year ago. It's something Kanduwa thinks about often.

"I have this thought, if he had received say five or six doses, he would have been immune from this ailment," Kanduwa said.

L’année suivante, Nelson Mandela lançait une nouvelle campagne : « Kick Polio Out of Africa » (Bouter la polio hors d’Afrique).

A polio-free world is in sight: what’s needed to wipe out the last 1%

The next three years are crucial in the global fight to eradicate the last 1% of polio cases and contain the virus across the world. But it will only become a reality with a combination of intensive vaccination campaigns and high-level surveillance to trace and monitor each polio case and circulating viruses.

The UN children's agency UNICEF, which plays a key role in polio vaccinations, called it an "extraordinary achievement" but warned it was "not an end point."

Collaborating with communities to improve vaccine coverage: a strategy worth pursuing?

It is unfortunate but distrust of vaccines remains widespread in the world today. In August 2003, a polio vaccination boycott was declared in the five northern states of Nigeria. Political and religious leaders argued that the vaccines could be contaminated with anti-fertility agents, HIV and cancer-causing agents. It took a full year to resolve the boycott but the one year period wreaked havoc on the status of polio across the world. There were polio outbreaks in three continents during that one year period. It ended up costing public health officials more than US$500.
