The world loses one of the "true heroes" of polio eradication

 

July 24, 2013--The Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports that Ali Maow Maalin, the last person to be infected with naturally occurring smallpox anywhere in the world, passed away on Monday in his home in Somalia. After avoiding the smallpox vaccine due to fear of needles, he contracted the illness. After his recovery, he became a strong advocate of vaccination, especially against polio, within his home country. Read more here.
