Uganda: 4.7 Million Children to Get Polio Vaccine

Beginning Saturday, the Ministry of Health will immunise children below five years against the polio virus using the oral polio vaccine.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Dr Asuman Lukwago, the vaccination campaign will start from January 23 to January 25 in 57 high-risk districts.

Safer Polio Vaccines on Way for Use After Eradication

The goal of eradicating polio worldwide is within sight.  But public health officials must make sure that vaccines administered after that point cannot cause a recurrence of the disease. Researchers in Britain have come up with a safe strain that would prevent polio reinfection.
Polio vaccines are stockpiled for use into the foreseeable future to prevent another epidemic of paralytic polio, once the disease is officially eradicated.

Polio victory very close, Bill Gates says at UAE awards ceremony

The campaign to rid the world of polio is close to total success, Microsoft founder Bill Gates said at an awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi on Sunday night.
“It is close, very close. Now is the time to double down our efforts to eradicate this disease,” Mr Gates said at the event held to honour five heroes of the fight against the disease, who risk their lives for the cause.
“The donors have to step up for a couple of years more and the countries on the frontline will have to remain vigilant.”

Nigeria: Health Workers - the Unseen Hands Behind Polio Eradication

Onochie Isa, the son of Ahmadu Kanduwa was the last case of polio in Nigeria and it has been over one year since Isa was diagnosed with It. Nigeria recently marked one year without any record of polio in the country. Just a little above a year ago, we recorded about six cases which dented our relentless efforts to see that no child gets infected again by this crippling disease.
